Process Equipment

The facility was originally designed to produce crystal polystyrene. Two separate production trains are capable of producing about 350,000 lbs per day. Train A has about twice the capacity of Train B. Products included prime crystal polystyrene, compounding-grade polystyrene, and styrene - methyl methacrylate copolymer. The process was operated as a continuous production facility.

Reactors: Reactors are circulating loop design for continuous or batch operation. Four reactors are currently operational. Reactors operating conditions are 350 oF and 25 psig.

Devolatizer: Residual monomers are removed from reactor product by a preheater/devolatilizer combination recovery system. All recovered monomers and inert solvents can be recycled to the reaction section. For polystyrene, residual styrene in the product could be reduced to a minimum of about 400 ppm.

Finishing: Strand pelletizing lines convert molten polymers into pellets. Train A has two pelletizing lines and Train B has one line.

Support Facilities

Process Heating: Two gas-fired oil heaters provide process heat. One unit supplies Train A and one unit supplies Train B. Therminol heat transfer fluid is used at a maximum supply temperature of about 525 oF.

Monomer Storage: There are two 30,000 gal underground monomer tanks and several smaller above ground tanks. Underground storage tanks are operated in full compliance with applicable regulations. Monomer storage tanks can be accessed by rail or tanker truck.

Polymer Storage: Six product silos range in capacity from 3500 to 7400 cubic feet. Polymer product can be loaded to hopper cars or hopper trucks.

Quality Control: Lab equipment includes two melt indexers, two gas chromatographs, Vicat softening point tester, and a small injection molder for testing polymer materials. Color analysis can be performed on pellets and molded parts.

Transportation: The site has two rail spurs with total capacity of 10 railcars. Lease track is available for an additional 30 cars. The site is served by CSX railroad and is easily accessible by truck from Interstates 70 and 75. The site is located approximately twenty minutes from Dayton International Airport.
