| SECTION 3 | HAZARD IDENTIFICATION | ||
POTENTIAL HEALTH EFFECTS: EYE: Vapors may cause irritation. Liquid is strong eye irritant. SKIN: Exposure may cause redness and irritation of the skin. May cause drying and flaking of the skin. A single, prolonged exposure is not likely to result in the material being absorbed through the skin in harmful amounts. INGESTION: Substance may be harmful if swallowed, although it is unlikely to have serious health effects in minute quantities. May cause central nervous system depression (dizziness, drowsiness), nausea and loss of consciousness. INHALATION: Short term exposure may cause respiratory irritation. Excessive exposure may cause central nervous system depression (dizziness, drowsiness), nausea and loss of consciousness. Repeated exposures may cause liver effects. CHRONIC (CANCER) INFORMATION: No evidence of carcinogenic activity, based on animal studies of vinyl toluene and animal studies of para-vinyl toluene (isomer of vinyl toluene). TERATOLOGY (BIRTH DEFECT) INFORMATION: No evidence of teratological effects, based on animal studies of para-vinyl toluene (isomer of vinyl toluene). REPRODUCTION INFORMATION: No evidence of reproductive effects, based on animal studies of para-vinyl toluene (isomer of vinyl toluene). POTENTIAL ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS: Based on studies of para-vinyl toluene (isomer of vinyl toluene), VT is moderately toxic to fathead minnows, daphnids, and green algae. No indication of cumulative toxicity. Compounds volatility would significantly limit persistence and mitigate the potential to produce adverse environmental impacts. |

| SECTION 4 | FIRST AID MEASURES | ||
EYES: Flush eyes thoroughly with water for 15 minutes. Consult physician if irritation persists.
SKIN: Wash affected area with soap and water. Remove contaminated clothing and shoes. Do not reuse contaminated clothing without laundering. Consult physician if irritation persists. INGESTION: Do not induce vomiting; consult physician immediately. INHALATION: Remove victim to fresh air. Get medical assistance immediately. May cause chemical pneumonia if aspirated. Administer oxygen if there is difficulty breathing. Administer artificial respiration if not breathing.
Because rapid absorption may occur through the lungs if aspirated, the decision of whether to induce vomiting should be made by a physician. If lavage is performed, suggest endotracheal and/or esophageal control. Danger from lung aspiration must be weighed against toxicity when considering emptying the stomach. Treat burns as thermal burns. Treatment based upon judgement of the physician in response to the reactions of the patient. |

HAZARDOUS COMBUSTION PRODUCTS: Carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and other toxic fumes of incomplete combustion. During a fire, smoke may contain mists of the original material. EXTINGUISHING MEDIA: Carbon dioxide, foam or dry chemical. Water fog or fine spray; water may be ineffective. General purpose synthetic foams or protein foams are preferred. FIRE FIGHTING INSTRUCTIONS: Use water spray to cool fire exposed containers, protect personnel, and disperse vapors and spills. Dike and collect water due to potential environmental damage and spread of fire with product carried across water surface. Use self-contained breathing apparatus and fight fire from safe distance due to explosion potential. UNUSUAL HAZARDS ASSOCIATED WITH FIRE: Closed containers of VT may build up explosive pressures when exposed to the heat of fires. Closed containers of VT exposed to the heat of fires may begin to polymerize in an exothermic manner leading to autoacceleration and rapid pressure increase and explosion potential. |

| SECTION 6 | ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES | ||
SMALL SPILL: Absorb spill with an inert material (dry sand) and place in chemical waste container for disposal (see section 13). Do not use reactive absorbents.
LARGE SPILL(on land): Remove all sparking devices and ignition sources. Contain spilled liquid with dikes of earth. Pump water into diked area and collect product from the top of water. Dispose of hydrocarbon laden water accordingly. Use oil spill collection pads and booms to contain runoff and seepage from diked areas. SPILLS INTO WATERWAYS: Contain spill with oil booms and recover product by vacuum truck or oil collection pads. REPORTABLE QUANTITY: Not a DOT listed Hazardous Substance. Various state and local regulations may apply. |

| SECTION 7 | HANDLING AND STORAGE | ||
HANDLING: Avoid contact with eyes. Avoid prolonged or repeated contact with skin. Keep containers tightly closed and use in well ventilated areas. Avoid prolonged or repeated breathing of vapors. Use grounding and bonding connections when transferring material to prevent static discharge, fire or explosion. Use spark proof tools and explosion proof equipment. Even empty containers may contain vapors. Do not cut, drill, grind or weld on containers, even if emptied of product.
STORAGE: Store in a cool area or refrigerated tank away from high temperatures, hot pipes or direct sunlight. Maintain VT temperature in storage below 90°F (32°C). Maintain inhibitor concentration above 10 ppm. If storage of more than 6 weeks is required aerate once per week with dry air to maintain dissolved oxygen above 10 ppm. |

ENGINEERING CONTROLS: Use local ventilation to maintain airborne concentrations below exposure limits. Use only with adequate ventilation.
RESPIRATORY PROTECTION: For operations where inhalation exposure may occur, a NIOSH approved air purifying respirator with organic vapor cartridge(s) or canister may be permissible. Protection provided by air purifying respirators is limited. Use a positive-pressure air-supplied respirator if there is any potential for uncontrolled release or any other circumstances where air-purifying respirators may not provide adequate protection. SKIN PROTECTION: When contact may occur, use protective clothing and gloves impervious to hydrocarbon materials. Use of specific items such as face shield, apron, gloves, boots or body suit is dependent upon operation. Wash hands thoroughly before eating, drinking or smoking. EYE PROTECTION: Use safety glasses when handling small amounts. When splashing may occur use chemical splash goggles and face shield. If vapors cause eye discomfort use a full-face, supplied-air respirator. |

| SECTION 10 | STABILITY AND REACTIVITY | ||
CHEMICAL STABILITY: Stable under recommended storage conditions. Inhibited with tertiary-butyl-catechol (TBC). Maintain temperature below 90°F (32°C). Maintain oxygen content above 10 ppm.
CONDITIONS TO AVOID: Avoid excessive heat and keep away from open flames or ignition sources. Avoid dead-headed pumps while transferring. INCOMPATABILITY: Do not use copper or brass tubing or connections. Do not mix with oxidizing agents, acids, metal halides or peroxides. HAZARDOUS DECOMPOSITON PRODUCTS : None known. HAZARDOUS POLYMERIZATION: Polymerization may occur if exposed to excessive heat or catalyzed by mixture with incompatible materials. Polymerization is exothermic and may result in autoacceleration and increased pressure, venting of container, and a fire or explosion hazard. |

| SECTION 11 | TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION | ||
EYE EFFECTS: 0.1 ml of para-vinyl toluene (isomer of vinyl toluene) applied in an ocular irritation study was found to be moderately irritating. No effects observed after 7 days.
SKIN EFFECTS: Draize testing with rabbits indicates that para-vinyl toluene (isomer of vinyl toluene) is not a skin irritant. ACUTE ORAL EFFECTS: Oral LD50 in rats is 5000mg/kg. ACUTE INHALATION EFFECTS: The LC50 is 3000mg/cu meter. SUBCHRONIC EFFECTS: Repeated inhalation exposure of rats to 1,000 ppm of vinyl toluene for 6 hours a day, 5 days per week for 13 weeks resulted in decreased body weights, excessive lacrimentation, rough hair coats and increased liver weights. Effects were noted to be more pronounced in male rats than female rats. Male rats exposed to 160, 400, and 1000 ppm for the same time period were also found to have mild nephrotoxic effects. CHRONIC EFFECTS / CARCINOGENICITY: Mean body weights of both male and female rats exposed to 300 ppm were 4-11% lower than control groups. No significant differences in survival rates between test groups and control groups were observed. There was evidence of various respiratory tract damage, but no evidence of carcinogenic activity for the test groups. 104 week Oncogenic Potential, oral - rat and 83 week Oncogenic Potential, oral - mouse studies conducted with para-vinyl toluene (isomer of vinyl toluene) found no evidence of carcinogenic activity. TERATOLOGY: Numerous teratology studies conducted with both rats and rabbits with daily doses as high as 600 mg/kg and 150 mg/kg, respectively, of para-vinyl toluene (isomer of vinyl toluene). No evidence of teratogenic activity observed. REPRODUCTION: A 2-generation study of rats with para-vinyl toluene (isomer of vinyl toluene) concluded that at doses which are not maternally toxic(25 and 200 mg/Kg), para-vinyl toluene does not interfere with the reproductive process in rats. Rats dosed with 600 mg/kg of para-vinyl toluene showed 10% reduction in body weight, both at birth and at weaning, as compared to the controls. MUTAGENICITY: Vinyl toluene did not induce gene mutations in the Ames assay. Vinyl toluene did not induce sister chromatid exchanges or chromosomal aberrations in the Chinese hamster ovary cytogenetic assay. In the mouse lymphoma assay vinyl toluene gave a positive response in two trials at the highest dose (100ug/ml). |

| SECTION 12 | ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION | ||
Special Note: All ecological information presented is based upon testing performed on only the para isomer of vinyl toluene.
ECOTOXICITY: The EC50 for Selenastrum capricornutum (algae) for 72 hr exposure was 2.6 mg/L, the NOEC was 1.6 mg/L. The EC50 for Daphnia magna (aquatic invertebrate) for 48 hr exposure was 0.81 mg/L, the NOEC was 1.6 mg/L. The EC50 for Pimephales promelas (fathead minnow) for 72 hr exposure was 5.2 mg/L, the NOEC was 2.6 mg/L. The EC50 for Leopomis macrochirus (bluegill sunfish) for 7 day exposure was 2.6 mg/L, the NOEC was 0.66 mg/L. Note: Due to the volatility of this compound all referenced testing was conducted in closed systems. CHEMICAL FATE INFORMATION: Biodegradation - more than 95% of para-vinyl toluene was found to be eliminated from activated sludge within 19 days. Vinyl toluene is expected to biodegrade in a wastewater treatment plant. Photodegradation: para-vinyl toluene has the potential to undergo direct photolysis in sunlit waters or in ambient air, however, reactions with photochemically produced hyroxyl radicals and ozone in the atmosphere are the most likely fate processes. Para-vinyl toluene has an ESTIMATED atmospheric half-life of 12.2 hrs at 25°C at an atmospheric concentration of 5E+5 hydroxyl radicals per cu cm, and 13 hrs at 25°C at an atmospheric concentration of 7E+11 ozone molecules per cu cm. Environmental fate and pathway elements: para-vinyl toluene is not expected to undergo hydrolysis in the environment. Para-vinyl toluene is not expected to bioconcentrate in aquatic organisms. |

DISPOSAL: USEPA RCRA hazardous waste if discarded (RCRA hazardous waste code D001). Recycle or incinerate at a USEPA approved facility or dispose in compliance with Federal, State, and local regulations. Heat of combustion equals approximately 17,700 BTUs/lb.
